About FreezeTime - The Free 'Stop the Timer' Game
FreezeTime is a free, browser-based "Stop the Timer" game - the same challenge that has taken over YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch. Also called the "Blind Timer", "Invisible Clock", "Hidden Timer". Start a hidden timer. Stop it at exactly the right moment. See how close you got.
The original "Stop the Timer" challenge requires a dedicated physical device - expensive, single-purpose, and honestly not worth it if you just want a fun game to play with friends and family. And using your phone's built-in timer isn't much better either: the timer is visible as it runs, so you'd have to flip the screen away from you and tap the Stop button blind.
We wanted everyone to be able to play and enjoy - not just those willing to spend on a dedicated device. So we built FreezeTime. The timer runs silently in the background while you watch a clean animation - no device to buy, no screen to hide, no awkwardly holding your phone. Just open the site, tap once to start, and tap once to stop.
How to Play FreezeTime
Two modes, one goal: stop the hidden timer as close to your target time as possible.
Classic Mode - The Solo Challenge
- Press Start. The timer begins running in the background - hidden from view. A pulsing animation plays so you stay focused on feel, not the clock.
- Press Stop. When you think you are close to the target time, tap Stop. Your exact time is revealed instantly - see how close you got.
- Play again. Once your time is revealed, press Space or Enter on desktop, or tap the screen on mobile - the timer resets instantly and you're ready for the next round.
Party Mode - The Team Strategy
- Press Start. One player taps Start and the timer begins running in the background - hidden from view. A pulsing animation plays so you stay focused on feel, not the clock. Tap it again to pause the timer (status changes to Resume). The time remains completely hidden!
- Pause & Pass. Tap to pause between turns. Each player adds their time. The total stays hidden throughout. Repeat as many times as the number of players.
- Hit Finish. When everyone's done, Pause the timer and hit Finish - the full elapsed time is revealed!
- Play again. Once your time is revealed, press Space or Enter on desktop, or tap the screen on mobile - the timer resets instantly and you're ready for the next round.
Settings & Customization
- Set a target (optional). Tap the settings icon and dial in your target time in MM:SS.CS format. The game will score your attempt against that target - showing the exact difference (e.g., stopping at 8.00s on a 10-second target shows −2.00s). Works in both modes!
- Make it yours. Pick from six colour themes for the timer animation - swap to whatever fits your mood, your setup, or just keeps things fresh when you're playing round after round.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the "Stop the Timer" challenge?
It's a reaction-and-estimation game where players start a timer and try to stop it at a specific time - like exactly 10 seconds - without watching the display. It blew up online as a party challenge for friends, families, and content creators.
Do I need to buy a special device?
No. Dedicated "Stop the Timer" devices can cost a significant amount of money - they're designed for streamers who can offset the cost through sponsorships or ad revenue. FreezeTime is completely free and works on any device with a browser.
Why not just use my phone's built-in stopwatch?
Your phone's stopwatch shows the time as it counts up, which defeats the point of the game. The workaround - flipping your screen away and tapping blind. It is awkward and not much fun. FreezeTime was built specifically for this: the timer runs hidden, the button stays visible, and you can focus entirely on your sense of time.
Can I play with friends?
Absolutely. Pass the device around, share the link, or open it on a second screen. Everyone takes a turn - whoever stops the timer closest to the target wins. Works great as a party game, a classroom activity, or a quick challenge between friends on a group call.
What does the target time setting do?
Tap the gear icon below the timer and set a target in minutes, seconds, and centiseconds. Once saved, every round will score your attempt against that target - showing the exact difference so players can compete for the closest stop.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. FreezeTime is designed for all screen sizes - phone, tablet, and desktop. The button is large and easy to tap with one thumb, so it works just as well in hand as it does on a desk.
Is it free?
Completely free. No sign-up, no download, no purchase required. Open the site and start playing in seconds.
